Ningaloo Reef, Australia
Western Australia is definitely one of the top places for underwater life. The country is blessed with coral reefs, sandy beaches and the most fascinating underwater creatures.
Ningaloo Reef is situated 1200km north from Perth, and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2011. In addition, it is home to over 500 species. The best time to visit is between April and july, to witness the famous mass coral spawning.
Isla Holbox, Mexico
On the other side of the world, Isla Holbox is your place to swim with sharks. Found 150km north of Cancun, this island offers spectacular views and underwater wildlife.
The best time for a visit would ideally be from late May to September, when the whale sharks arrive to feed and mate. However, if you go from July to August, then you will get to swim with sharks on their peak season.
Donsol Bay, Philippines
Asia is also rich in places that allow you to swim with sharks. Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia…They have a huge variety of ocean life. However, Donsol Bay is tourists’ favorite. The sharks were actually discovered in the late 90’s, ”accidentally” by a fishing boat. Since then, if you go between February and April, you won’t miss the sightings peak.
Donsol Bay is located 45km southwest of Legazpi, an obscure fishing village in the philippines. Nowadays, it’s a world-attraction because of its shark population.
Dyer Island, South Africa
The African side of the world borders the Atlantic, pacific and Indian Ocean. All three are known for their rich underwater life. It is no secret that South Africa is more than a perfect spot to swim with sharks.
Dyer Island is in fact named the ‘‘Great White Shark diving capital of the world.” Mainly, because of the its location. It includes the stretch of water that witnesses most shark migration, and is often referred to as the ”shark alley.” In order to enjoy a great swim with sharks, Dyer Island is your adventure spot.
South Ari Atoll, Maldives
Finally, who hasn’t dreamt of visiting the turquoise beaches of the Maldives? Besides being a common attraction for tourists, it also offers opportunities to swim with sharks, and discover the underwater species of the area.
The western side of the Indian Ocean archipelago is known to be a year-round home for whale sharks. South Ari Atoll is a marine protected area, in which you can enjoy snorkeling and sightseeing sharks from May and until December.
